FOTN & PopMatters Celebrate 25 Years of 'Brown'

My apologies; I've gotten a bit behind on news, so please allow me to catch up.

Most recently, if I may toot my own horn, I wrote a feature for PopMatters celebrating the 25th anniversary of Fields of the Nephilim's iconic album The Nephilim, featuring interviews with some unexpected musicians who were inspired by it, including Watain, Horseback, and Katatonia. (It also includes interviews with Tony Pettitt, Peter Yates and Richard Stanley). Check it out here.

Also, perhaps in honor of the album's silver anniversary, FOTN announced that they will be playing the entire brown album from start to finish during their UK dates in December.

NFD O2 Academy London setlist

NFD made its triumphant return to the London stage on Saturday (alas, without Tony Pettitt holding down the bottom end), playing at the O2 Academy before retiring to an afterparty at Slimelight for a Red Lorry Yellow Lorry gig. A kind soul over at the Dawnrazor forum reviewed both shows -- including all the openers -- and included the setlist for NFD. Here it is:

Main set:
When the Sun Dies
Got Left Behind
Remain in Chains
Red Sky Burning
The Unknown
Return to Dust
Senseless
Light my Way

Encore:
One Moment Between Us

"Watcher" summarized: " Bob and his gang started with their killer hit “When the Sun Dies” and then focused on their new material. They played 5 songs from their forthcoming new ep. Definitely some of the best songs that they have ever composed. Amazing guitar work from both Chris and James and Bob’s vocals exactly the way they should be!"

First Look: Richard Stanley's "L'Autre Monde"

Richard Stanley is a household name among Fields of the Nephilim fans; he produced several of the band's early videos and featured Carl McCoy as the Zone Tripper in "Hardware." Now Richard has become his own Zone tripper, and is set to release a new film, "L'Autre Monde" (the other world), a documentary about the occult secrets of the French region Montsegur. You can find out more about the film -- and see still shots from it -- at Twitchfilm.com. Check it out!

A Message From The Owner

As many of you know, I've been running this site for ages (I honestly can't remember how long). I do my best to keep up with everything, both here and on the Facebook page (which is often more up-to-date). But I've got a full-time job, a side career and a family -- not to mention a case of absent-mindedness that would be funny if it didn't sometimes make people angry with me.

This is a place where I share news about Fields of the Nephilim and any related band -- meaning any band that includes musicians who were either in FOTN or Nefilim. It's a lot to keep up with, and because so much of it passes by in a blur on Facebook, I miss things. If you are in one of those bands, or if you're following one of those bands and there's something new to report, please share it with me so I can add it to Sumerland. I've added a handy "CONTACT" link over there on the left to make it easier. And yes, it really does need to be emailed. I often never see the messages people send on Facebook, mostly because Facebook is buggy.

Sumerland is, and always has been, a community effort, not the least because FOTN has a pretty great community surrounding it. I appreciate everything you've done to help keep this site up to date, and appreciate you making sure I don't forget anything.

Thanks,
Beth

News Roundup

My, we've gotten a little behind, haven't we? So, The Eden House's new album, "Half Life," is now out and for sale through the usual channels. You can stream and/or buy it at Bandcamp. And if that isn't enough, there's an interview with Stephen Carey over at Intravenous that involves, among other things, Febreeze jokes.

The indefatigable NFD are still putting the finishing touches on some new music. Bob White recently reported on Facebook, "Mixing, mixing forever mixing......but well worth it!" He also made a clip of a new song available yesterday, which you can check out on Reverb Nation. And don't forget about NFD's album-release party at the O2 Academy in Islington July 6.

John Carter's band, XII, unveiled a new track/video this month called "Virtue." Here's the vid:

The track should be for sale via all the usual online retailers, and John reported today that more music is on the way -- stay tuned to his Themes for Ancients page for all the latest.

And Fields of the Nephilim (oh, yeah, them! :) ) is selling a limited amount of merch from the recent Scandinavia shows. Next stop: Germany.

Eden House "Half Life" Preview

If you've been dying to check out "Half Life," now's your chance to get a taste. Enjoy:

Helsinki Surprise

I'd heard rumors that something "very special" would happen in Helsinki, and sure enough, it did. Tony Pettitt, the founding bassist of Fields of the Nephilim, who now plays regularly with NFD and the Eden House, took on bass duties last night in Finland. No word yet on whether this is a one-off or whether he'll play more shows with FOTN live, but still, what a treat for those who were there. To see a photo of Tony in action, check out this photo from FOTN manager Rob Ferguson.

Here's a bit of a post from Oskar Terramortis about the situation that led to Tony's appearance with the band last night. And and here's another from Obksure magazine (en Francais).

Hopefully we'll get the setlist soon, and I expect we'll start seeing videos turn up from the show as people begin to recover from what they witnessed last night in Scandinavia.

EDIT: Here's the setlist (Yes, I'm assuming that's a typo in the date), thanks to @spiraldrain and Ande Tucker:

Main set:
Shroud
Straight to the Light
One More Nightmare
From the Fire
Love Under Will
The Watchman
Preacher Man
Psychonaut
Moonchild
Zoon Pt. 3

Encore:
Penetration
Last Exit For The Lost
Vet for the Insane

And here's the video for "Last Exit." So good to hear Tony on the bass.

Sweden + Amphi Confirmed

Just a quick note to mention that all the Sweden shows and the Amphi Festival gig have been confirmed by the official site. Apparently, though, they don't yet have a venue nailed down for the Stockholm gig, so pretend I never said anything about the Debaser club for now, OK? For more details, click on over to the Live page.

NFD Gig + More Sweden?

NFD has announced that the band will play at the O2 Academy in Islington, London on Saturday, July 6. The band also unveiled a clip from another new song, "Keep A Light Shining," which you can hear on the player below:

It's also looking like FOTN may play another date in Sweden, this time on April 28 in Stockholm at the Debaser. As with the others, for now it's unconfirmed.

Another Sweden Date + The US??

Adding to the likelihood that we'll see FOTN in Sweden this year, the Sticky Fingers club announced that the band is slated to play a gig in Göteborg on April 27. Tickets don't appear to be available yet.

In other rumors, Carl McCoy recently told Sonic Seducer:

"A US tour is under discussion." "We will definitely release something." It may be EPs or a full album.

Of course, we've heard such things before. Do we dare to hope?

FOTN Returning to Sweden?

Yesterday, unofficial channels announced that Fields of the Nephilim will play a gig at Babel in Malmö, Sweden, on April 26 -- for the first time since 1991. It isn't officially confirmed by the band yet, but you can buy tickets here, if you're feeling lucky.

"Bad Men" On Its Way

The Eden House announced this week that the band's new single, "Bad Men (On Their Way to do Bad Things)" will be released on Jungle Records March 4 on CD, and in digital formats, including on iTunes. The track features the usual band members, plus Monica Richards, Amandine Ferrari, Simon Hinkler and Phil Manzanera. The B-side is "Survival Instinct." The single is just a taster of the band's next album, Half Life, out soon.

NFD continues the hard work on its next album, "Waking the Dead," and this week offered another peek into the work-in-progress. Here's a clip from "The Great Divide."

The Eden House Cancels Tour

The Eden House posted some bad news on Facebook:
Bad News ... We've been informed that Dreadful Shadows have cancelled their German tour. Unfortunately this also means that the other dates we planned are no longer possible ... As you can imagine we're gutted about this -- and also for people that may have booked travel for these shows. We are currently working with our agent to book our own dates in Germany and elsewhere to coincide with the release of our new album "Half Life" in April.
On the plus side, they've also unveiled art for the next single. Enjoy.
